Did you notice that many bookstores have shut down?

Funnily enough, they aren’t the only ones.

Magazines and newspapers are going by the wayside too, with printing costs rising, having a little fan base as readers and prospects deciding to get their information for free online.

Whether you accept it or not, the old style of writing is fading away and physical opportunities are drying up.

It’s not because those companies hire dreadful writers. It’s because the Internet is growing and everything is.

But, while old opportunities fade away, new ones are taking their places, and the few writers who know what to do are making the money and enjoying greater freedom than ever before.

Chances are, you’ve heard of content writing/marketing, but you might not know what it is or why it’s so important for your prospects as a writer.

Well, Content Writing is about releasing informative content such as podcasts, articles, social media posts, videos to educate your prospect and attract them to working with you.

Research reveals that companies are investing amazing sums of money in content marketing, and the budgets keep growing yearly.

You want to ask–WHY?

Content marketing generates more leads than traditional marketing, while costing less.

But, guess who those companies are hiring in large numbers?

They are WRITERS.

And if you have heard your ears to the ground, you will agree that the salary that they give writers reflects how important they are.

We all write daily!

But to become an excellent writer, you must be an expert reader and a creative thinker.

Writing is common with most people, but it is in everybody. Like the Title of Ann Handley book title–“Everybody Writes.”

Whether you’re trying to send a letter, update your WhatsApp status, or post anything on Facebook, we are all writers.

But you still want to ask, “how do I become an effective writer?”

This is a question I get often. Well, you don’t need to stress it as I will answer your question in today’s blog.

To become an effective writer; you must

1. Know Why You Want To Become A Writer

The saying “Different strokes for different folks” is the same for Writers too.

You must be able to answer the Why question before you embark on your writing journey.

  • Are you doing it to establish your social media authority?
  • Or do you desire to pursue a career?
  • Or is it for you to increase website traffic?
  • Or maybe you wish to develop your client-pitching portfolio or increase the number of incoming LinkedIn leads.

Answering these questions with honesty will help you establish yourself as an expert in the writing field, anyway.

2. Train Yourself To Be A Better Reader

“The greatest gift is a passion for reading.” — Elizabeth Hardwick.

Every successful writer is an excellent reader.

You must make reading frequently a habit as a writer because it exposes your mind intentionally to excellent writing.

You unconsciously absorb the style, tone, textual components, outline, and other qualities of other writers.

You also get ideas from reading, and they come in abundance. It is simpler to write and develop ideas the more you have.

3. Take Online Courses.

You can develop your writing abilities in a more useful way by enrolling in classes.

Online courses expose you to learning more and getting adequate certification.

4. Practice By Writing Everyday

Constant practice is the key to improvement.

The simplest method to write for practice is to share on social media and start a blog. You can share your material on a variety of free blogs, such as Medium, LinkedIn, Blogger, and other platforms.

You will observe how the process gets simpler as you produce fresh stories, blogs, books, articles, and scripts regularly.

It will also become a natural part of you as you write frequently. You’ll notice that your ideas are much clearer, and writing will be enjoyable for you. You’ll concur with me when I say that doing things you are exceptional at is always more enjoyable.

5. Take Criticism

You, like most creatives, frequently find it challenging to receive honest criticism from other individuals.

If you want to get better at writing, you must put your ego aside and look for a forum or community where you can receive helpful criticism.

Find a friend or online forums that can help you with feedback so that you can really hone your skills.

If you’re serious about earning a full-time living from your writing, you must carefully monitor the online space for opportunities and also develop your skills to compete with the best of the best.

And to be clear–Writing is not just about the money you can make. The freedom you enjoy while you meet others’ needs.
